Holiday Resort Unity aspires to be at the forefront of pioneering sustainability across the tourism industry, and we want to inspire transformational change within our teams and customers. Holiday Resort Unity has joined the Earth Day movement and on April 22nd we hosted a beach clean up on our local Brean beach, mobilizing 20 passionate individuals from across our team of employees and caravan owners.
As part of our ongoing commitment to positive environmental impact, we decided to take part in the Earth Day 2024 initiative early on in the year by pledging to reduce plastic pollution. This year’s theme, focusing on Planet vs. Plastics, aims to raise awareness of the detrimental impact that plastic pollution is having on our environment and planetary health.
Holiday Resort Unity has recently registered as a Plastic Free Champion and as an organisation, we are working towards our first accreditation. We have already implemented many significant changes, such as removing single-use cleaning wipes, laundry bags, swim nappies and cups.
Starting at reception, our Sustainability Coordinator Hannah highlighted potential risks and distributed litter pickers and bin bags kindly given to us by Somerset County Council. We set to work along the bridleway and headed onto the beach where we covered a 1km stretch of beach, picking up as much rubbish as possible along the way.
The group were astounded by the amount of rubbish - particularly plastics – present on the beach. We managed to fill 15 bags to the brim! The cleanup reminded us that although we are taking significant steps to help decrease plastic pollution by reducing the amount of plastic used in our operations, this is still a very pertinent global issue. We want to continue doing our bit for the planet and look to host a beach cleanup every other month.
Please follow us on our social media channels where you can keep up to date with the latest news regarding our next beach cleanup. We hope to see even more people in attendance and encourage employees, caravan owners, visitors and members of the local community to attend!
